Caregivers: they run the errands, they divvy up the medication, they provide around-the-clock assistance and so much more. Recognized as a vital but often stressful role, family caregivers consistently work to offer the best possible care for their loved ones – which is why Peconic Bay Medical Center recognizes that caregivers also need a little love themselves.

The hospital’s Caregivers Center held a special Caregivers Retreat this week presenting valuable resources and support for family members with loved ones who are patients of Peconic Bay Medical Center or who are caring for loved one at home. “Being a caregiver can be an overwhelming, selfless task. A caregiver takes on a role that is very critical to the recovery process,” said Amy Loeb, EdD, MBA, RN, Deputy Executive Director of Peconic Bay Medical Center.  “Our Caregivers Center and the Caregivers Retreat is a means to provide our caregivers the vital resources and support to enable them to care for their loved ones while caring for themselves on an ongoing basis,” she continued.

Modeled after the pioneering Ken Hamilton Caregivers Center at Northern Westchester Hospital, Peconic Bay Medical Center’s John speaking.jpgCaregivers Center is Long Island’s first hospital-based resource center expressly dedicated to providing support services for patients’ family members.  The Peconic Bay Medical Center Caregivers Center recognizes the vital but often stressful role of family caregivers in providing the best care for loved ones, not just during a hospital stay, but during the recovery period that follows when loved ones return home. With the Caregivers Center originally built to provide a place of support and comfort, it was only fitting that during the Caregivers Retreat John and Mark Cronin of John’s Crazy Socks, a local multi-million dollar sock business and winners of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2019 New York Award, stopped by to address attendees.

Co-founded by John, a young man diagnosed with Down syndrome, along with his father, Mark, the company manufactures and sells “crazy socks” to spread happiness and put a smiles on people’s faces. From beach turtles to “Pugs and Kisses” to otters holding hands, each pair of socks offers the buyer the chance to express their passion and personality.

“Being a caregiver is definitely a challenge, and, it can become difficult to remember your sense of identity and to focus on your own needs when you are so busy looking after someone else,” said Mark Cronin, co-founder of John’s Crazy Socks. “Offering a Caregivers Retreat is a powerful idea to support and offer continued resources to those going through challenges which come along with the role of caregiver,” he continued.

“We have a mission to spread happiness and we want to bring some happiness to the care givers,” said John Lee Cronin. “Doing for others brings happiness so the caregivers deserve happiness,” added John Lee Cronin.

The dynamic father and son duo gave an inspirational speech about the power of love, caring and commitment to making a difference in the world. “It is the small actions which make a difference, like giving a pair of socks, being a caregiver or having someone to rely on when life gets tough,” said Tara Anglim, Director of Patient and Family Centered Care at Peconic Bay Medical Center. “We are grateful to have such inspiring individuals as John and Mark with us at this event at Peconic Bay Medical Center and hearing about their story of spreading happiness,” she continued.
